Red Dead Redemption 2 Exotics: Algernon's Lists and Where to Find Each Item

FAQ

How do you start the exotics quest in Red Dead Redemption 2?
Finish the Chapter 4 mission "The Gilded Cage". The stranger mission "Duchesses and Other Animals" then opens at Algernon Wasp's greenhouse on the north side of Saint Denis.
What do you get for finishing Algernon's exotics?
The Exotic Hat and Algernon’s Revolver, plus cash. List 1 is reported as $100 or $110; later lists pay $125, $150, $175 and $200. That makes $750 or $760 in total, pending in-game verification.
Is Duchesses and Other Animals needed for 100% completion?
Yes. Finishing the mission is one of the requirements for 100% completion and the "Best in the West" trophy.
Where do you find most of the exotics?
In Lemoyne. All the plumes, the alligator eggs and most of the orchids are in and around Bayou Nwa. A few orchids grow in Big Valley, on Roanoke Ridge and in the Grizzlies East.

How do you start the exotics quest?

The exotics belong to the stranger mission “Duchesses and Other Animals”:

  1. Finish the Chapter 4 story mission “The Gilded Cage”.
  2. Go to Algernon Wasp’s greenhouse on the north side of Saint Denis. (View on map)
  3. He gives you his first list. Bring him everything on it, and he hands you the next one.

There are five lists, and you must hand them in in order. After the fifth delivery, meet him once more for the final reward. The mission counts toward 100% completion.

The video below walks through all five lists and shows where each orchid and bird is found.

What is on each list?

List Items Reward
1 5 Little Egret plumes, 5 Reddish Egret plumes, 5 Snowy Egret plumes, 15 Lady of the Night orchids $100 / $110
2 20 Heron plumes, 7 Lady Slipper orchids, 10 Moccasin Flower orchids $125
3 25 Alligator eggs, 3 Acuna’s Star orchids, 7 Cigar orchids, 5 Ghost orchids $150
4 30 Spoonbill plumes, 10 Rat Tail orchids, 5 Spider orchids, 5 Night Scented orchids $175
5 5 Clamshell orchids, 5 Dragon’s Mouth orchids, 5 Queen’s orchids, 10 Sparrow’s Egg orchids $200

Sources disagree on list 1: IGN and Red Dead Wiki record $100, while rdr2.org records $110. The five listed payments therefore total $750 or $760. We have not resolved this with an in-game check. The final meeting also awards the Exotic Hat and Algernon’s Revolver.

Where do you find the plumes and eggs?

Item Where to look
Little, Reddish and Snowy Egret plumes Bayou Nwa in Lemoyne, especially the western part of the swamp, during the day
Heron and Spoonbill plumes Bayou Nwa, and also Bluewater Marsh
Alligator eggs The wetlands of Bayou Nwa, for example around Shady Belle

You get the plumes from the birds you hunt, so a trip through the Bayou in daylight can cover several lists at once.

Where do the orchids grow?

Orchid List Where to look Map
Lady of the Night 1 Bayou Nwa View on map
Lady Slipper 2 Big Valley, West Elizabeth View region
Moccasin Flower 2 Roanoke Ridge, New Hanover, around Butcher Creek and southeast of Elysian Pool View on map
Acuna’s Star 3 Bayou Nwa View on map
Cigar 3 Bayou Nwa View on map
Ghost 3 The wetlands around Saint Denis (guides disagree on the exact spot) View on map
Rat Tail 4 Bayou Nwa View on map
Spider 4 Bayou Nwa View on map
Night Scented 4 Scarlett Meadows, south and southeast of Braithwaite Manor View on map
Clamshell 5 Around Saint Denis (guides give three different spots) View on map
Dragon’s Mouth 5 Grizzlies East, Ambarino View on map
Queen’s 5 Bayou Nwa, between Lagras and Lakay View on map
Sparrow’s Egg 5 Roanoke Ridge, New Hanover View region

The Lady Slipper and Sparrow’s Egg links open their known growing regions, not verified individual plants. Six upstream markers in the wrong regions have been removed; remaining markers have not all been checked in-game.

Most of the lists can be done in Bayou Nwa. Plan one trip to Big Valley and Roanoke Ridge for list 2, and one to the Grizzlies East for the Dragon’s Mouth orchids on list 5.

Where to go next

Bayou Nwa is a long ride from most of the map, so a fast horse helps. See the best horses guide. The Bayou is also home to the Legendary Bullgator. New to the game? Start with the beginner guide.
