Which treasure maps are there?

Story mode has five treasure hunts that end in gold bars. Sell the bars to a Fence for $500 each.

Added together that is 16 gold bars, or $8,000. Other story-mode maps include the torn treasure map, which pays out a rare revolver instead of gold. It is covered at the end of this page.

How do you do the Jack Hall Gang treasure?

On the map: Map 1 · Map 2 · Treasure

1. Get the first map. At the start of the stranger mission “All That Glitters”, the treasure hunter Maximo sits on the river cliff west of Flatneck Station. You can meet him once Chapter 2 starts. He asks $10 and drops to $5 if you refuse once. If you miss him, a Fence sells the first map.
2. Map 1 → Caliban’s Seat, the rock formation southwest of Valentine.

3. Map 2 → Cotorra Springs, the geyser field in Ambarino.

4. Map 3 → the small island in O’Creagh’s Run, the lake in the Grizzlies East.

The last spot holds 2 gold bars.

How do you do the Poisonous Trail treasure?

On the map: Start · Map 2 · Map 3 · Treasure

1. Get the first map from a lockbox under the bed in a cabin at Cairn Lake, in northwest Ambarino.

2. Map 1 → Face Rock in Scarlett Meadows, Lemoyne, west of Ringneck Creek and northwest of Hill Haven Ranch. The next map is in a hollow tree trunk.

3. Map 2 → Serpent Mound on Roanoke Ridge, west of Van Horn. Look in the middle of the oval ring of stones.

4. Map 3 → the cave behind the Elysian Pool waterfall. Go deep into the cave. You have to jump across a few gaps. The treasure is in a rock pile at the end.

Reward: 4 gold bars.

How do you do the High Stakes treasure?

On the map: Map 2 · Map 3 · Treasure

1. Get the first map from a bearded treasure hunter who roams the area between Diablo Ridge and Riggs Station. He won’t hand it over, so you have to tie him up, kill him, or knock him down to take it. Guides disagree on when he starts to appear: some say after “All That Glitters”, others after the Chapter 3 mission “The New South”. If you can’t find him, come back after Chapter 3.
2. Map 1 → Cumberland Falls. The next map is in a small cave behind the waterfall.

3. Map 2 → Barrow Lagoon, the frozen lake in the Grizzlies West. Search around the fallen log that leads to the small island.

4. Map 3 → the ridge between Fort Wallace and Bacchus Station. Climb down the ledges of the cliff to reach the treasure.

Reward: 3 gold bars.

How do you do Landmarks of Riches?

On the map: Start · Map 2 · Map 3 · Map 4 · Treasure

This hunt was added with the 2019 PC release and pays the most gold. It has no mission requirement.

It is also available in the updated PS4 and Xbox One versions. The former PC-only story content reached PS4 on December 13, 2019 and Xbox One on January 21, 2020; see the PlayStation announcement and Rockstar update notes.

1. Start at the obelisk northwest of Lake Owanjila in West Elizabeth. Inspect the plaque to find the first map behind it.

2. Map 1 → Tiny Church in Lakay, Bayou Nwa. The next map is up by the small bell tower on the roof.

3. Map 2 → Mysterious Hill Home in the Grizzlies East, northeast of Fort Wallace and Bacchus Station. Get in through the broken window in the roof.

4. Map 3 → Bolger Glade in Scarlett Meadows, east of Braithwaite Manor. Check the hollow of the tree next to the broken cannon.

5. Map 4 → the big sundial on top of Mount Shann, north of Strawberry.

Under a stone at the base of the sundial are 6 gold bars.

How do you do the Elemental Trail?

On the map: Start · Map 2 · Map 3 · Treasure

This hunt is Epilogue only, because every location is in New Austin and only John can go there. Sources disagree on whether it opens in Epilogue Part 1 or after you finish the story.

1. Get the first map from a body hanging off the cliffs above the Sea of Coronado, southwest of Tumbleweed. Shoot the rope, then search the body.

2. Map 1 → a lone chimney at a burned-down house. Guides describe this spot differently, so follow the drawing on the map.

3. Map 2 → Benedict Point, south of Tumbleweed. Check the raised water trough that runs from the water tower to the railroad.

4. Map 3 → Coot’s Chapel, southeast of Armadillo. The treasure is under a loose rock by the wooden cross under the tree in the graveyard.

Reward: 1 gold bar, the Crow’s Beak trinket (more ammo when you loot bodies) plus Special Horse Medicine and Special Horse Stimulant (reward list).

What about the torn treasure map?

On the map: Treasure

The torn treasure map comes in two halves, and both are in the hands of hermits:

• One half is in the hermit woman’s cabin at the source of the Little Creek River. She and her three dogs attack you.
• The other half is in the hermit man’s home at Manito Glade on Roanoke Ridge, north of Annesburg.

You can join the halves into the Mended Map from Chapter 2. The treasure itself is in a cave in Cholla Springs, west of Twin Rocks, in New Austin, so you can only collect it in the Epilogue. It gives Otis Miller’s Revolver, a rare weapon, but no gold.

Where to go next

Gold bars are the fastest honest money in the game. If you just want cash, the “Greed is now a virtue” cheat gives $500 at a time, but cheats block saving. Several treasure spots are deep in the Grizzlies, near the legendary animals Bharati Grizzly Bear and Wolf, so you can combine the trips. New to the game? Start with the beginner guide.
