When can you start hunting legendary animals?
After Hosea’s Chapter 2 mission “Exit Pursued by a Bruised Ego”. You hunt the Legendary Bharati Grizzly Bear during that mission, and the rewards include the legendary animal map, which marks every legendary animal’s area. From then on, 11 of the 16 are open to you.

The other five need more progress:
- Legendary Bullgator: after the Chapter 5 mission “That’s Murfree Country” (some lists say Chapter 6).
- Legendary Giaguaro Panther: after you finish Master Hunter challenge 9.
- Legendary Cougar, Pronghorn and Tatanka Bison: New Austin, from Epilogue Part 1 (“The Wheel”).
None of them can be missed for good. If you finish the story first, all 16 are still waiting in the Epilogue.
How do you track a legendary animal?
- Ride into the area shown on the legendary animal map. A prompt tells you that you are in its territory.
- Use Eagle Eye to find clues: tracks, kills or dung.
- Inspect three clues. The third one leads you to the animal. Bharati only needs two.
- Get close quietly and shoot when you have a clear shot.

The video below shows every legendary animal’s area and what each one looks like when you find it.

Each animal exists once per save. Once you kill it, it does not come back.
What do you do with the pelts and parts?
Pelts go to the Trapper. Selling a legendary pelt unlocks Trapper outfits made from it:
| Trapper outfit set | Legendary pelts used |
|---|---|
| The Bear Hunter | Bharati Grizzly Bear |
| The Dreamcatcher | Beaver, Boar, Tatanka Bison |
| The Stalker | Bighorn Ram, Moose |
| The Trophy Buck | Buck, Fox |
| The Huntsman | Coyote, Pronghorn |
| The Ghost Bison | Elk, White Bison |
| The Beast of Prey | Wolf, Cougar |
| The Death Roll | Bullgator, Giaguaro Panther |
The Trapper has a fixed shop at the Saint Denis market and travelling stalls in the wild, such as the hilltop east of Riggs Station and Tall Trees. They become available in Chapter 2.
Claws, teeth and antlers go to the Fence, who makes talismans and trinkets from them. For example, the legendary bear claw becomes a talisman that slows how fast your health core drains.
Where to go next
Legendary hunts are long rides, so a good horse saves a lot of time. See the best horses guide, including the free White Arabian near Lake Isabella, close to the White Bison. New to the game? Start with the beginner guide. If you only want the pelts and outfits, the cheats list has Dead Eye and stamina cheats. Remember that cheats block saving.
